There was nothing, not a single branch or large rock, and Morgan could feel the panic nipping at her as the coyotes advanced. She pressed harder against Lemon; the ewe made a strangled bleating noise but didn’t squirm away. It was frozen with fear.

Morgan moaned loudly when the coyote on the left crouched down. She reached for the ewe. Fear had made her desperate, and she had the wild idea that she would pick Lemon up and make a run for it.

Before she could even lift the ewe from the ground, the coyote leaped. Something came out of the darkness, something dark and wet and growling ferociously, and her frightened mind had just enough time to register that it was Vincent before he hit the coyote mid-leap. They tumbled to the ground, snarling and snapping at each other, and she cried out when she heard Vincent make a sharp howl of pain.

“Vincent!” Crying and shaking, she realized with horror that the other coyote was still slinking towards them. It paid no attention to its pack mate twisting and writhing on the ground with Vincent. Its yellow eyes stared hungrily at the ewe behind her, and Morgan wrapped her arms around Lemon’s thick waist.

She heaved the ewe up, her arms shaking with the weight, and took two steps forward. Her sandals slid on the wet grass and she fell backwards on to her ass, Lemon bleating with terror as she fell on top of Morgan.

Morgan watched horrified as the coyote ran towards them. She jerked and shrieked in surprise when a loud shot rang out. The coyote collapsed to the ground only a few feet from where she was lying on the wet ground. She started to cry when she saw Gabe grimly lowering the rifle.

The second coyote, frightened by the gunshot, had torn free of Vincent. Vincent staggered forward and then collapsed to the ground as the coyote barked once and turned to run. Gabe raised the rifle to his shoulder and Morgan buried her face in Lemon’s soft wool as a second shot rang out.

She cried out when Lemon was jerked away from her but it was only Gabe. He knelt beside her and cupped her face. “Morgan! Honey, are you okay? Are you hurt?”

“No, I’m fine.” She gasped out. “Vincent, check on Vincent!”

He hesitated and she clawed at his shirt. “Gabe, go! Please!”

He turned and ran towards Vincent as she staggered to her feet and followed him. She dropped to her knees beside Vincent’s still body.

“Oh no – oh please! Gabe is he – is he dead?” She started to weep as she touched Vincent’s wet fur.

Gabe shook his head. “No, but we need to get him to the vet.” He lifted Vincent into his arms and strode towards the barn. Her hands shaking and rain mixing with the tears on her face, Morgan grabbed his rifle and followed him, Lemon trailing behind her.
